Considering hydropower’s vital role in meeting the world’s energy, water and climate challenges, during 2015 the sector is continuing its strong growth trend.
According to estimates in a briefing of International Hydropower Association, during the last year 33 GW new hydropower capacity was commissioned worldwide, including 3.2 GW of pumped storage.
At the end of 2015 the total installed hydropower capacity reached 1 211 GW, including 145 GW of pumped storage.
Continuing the trend of recent years, the majority of new hydropower capacity was put into operation in China, but increased activity in Africa is also featured with several completed projects. In Ethiopia and Guinea.
The particular qualities of the energy generated by water – such as reliable, clean and afordablе, as well as the significant balancing and regulating role of HPP, determine the notable trend of the continuous sector’s growth.
